making a good cup of coffee doesn’t have to be intimidating or complicated. there are just a few basic elements to consider.

  • grinding coffee right before you brew is pretty much essential for maintaining the flavor and quality of the coffee in your brew. we recommend a burr grinder over a blade grinder for a consistent and controlled grind.

  • for anything that’s not an auto drip machine or an espresso machine, a goose neck kettle is the best for controlled pouring. ideally, one that has a heating device and thermometer on it is best, but there are also stovetop kettles with a thermometer attached to the lid that work great.

  • the water to coffee ratio is a coffee-drinking fundamental. for any method of coffee brewing, measuring both the grams of coffee and the grams of water is essential for getting the best flavor out of your brew. as a bonus, a scale that includes a timer is extremely convenient. a phone timer works just fine, too.

  • water is almost the biggest factor in brewing a good cup of coffee at home; a cup of coffee is mostly water. at bare minimum, use filtered water to brew your coffee. to ensure that you’re tasting the best of the bean, use distilled or reverse osmosis water with the right minerals added back in. there’s a lot of coffee scientists out there that have discovered the right ratio of minerals in water to make coffee taste the best. we add Third Wave Water mineral packets to our distilled water to brew our roasted coffee at home.
