how to make coffee using a french press
why we love this method
this is one of our favorite ways to make a few cups at once, but it does take about 10 minutes from start to finish. it’s great for a slow weekend morning breakfast to share, or a work from home day that feels like it requires a few cups of coffee throughout the morning.
about the method
use a medium grind, not super coarse like is a widely-held french press practice. depending on your grinder, this might be one or two ticks coarser than your V60 pour over grind-size.
you can use either a 16:1 or 17:1 water to coffee ratio, depending on preference or the coffee. we like to use 30g of coffee and 500g of water, which is a little bit in between the two ratios. this recipe can be easily doubled for a greater volume of coffee (60g of coffee and 1000g of water) if the size of your french press allows it.
the steps
start heating the water to boiling or near boiling
grind the coffee to a medium grind
put 30g of coffee grounds in the bottom of the french press
tare the scale and pour 500 g of water in
let sit for 4 minutes
stir the crust: the grounds and some foam and chaff will rise to the top and you can scoop any of this off if you want to.
wait another 5 minutes.
put the plunger lid in and press it down to just the top of the liquid. don’t press all the way down because it will stir up the particles and bring some silt into your cup
pour out a cup of your french press and enoy!
you can press the filter down to the top of the remaining liquid each time you pour another cup.
